Create your legacy…

Quick Inspiration | Jennifer Diaz

I’ve been thinking about the reasons why we create all the things we do. From our specific businesses and programs to our art and daily routines.

A couple of years ago I was on a call with a client, who happens to be another coach and an incredibly talented writer.

She had just shared something she’d written, and after being blown away by how moving it was I asked, “Why don’t you share your writing more? This is gold!”

She said, “Because I don’t write the ‘right’ way. Every time I see advice on how you should write for your business or social media, it’s nothing like the way I naturally write.”

That made me wonder, how many of us deny our own natural creative gifts because they’re not the “right” way to do things?  How often do we contort ourselves to fit inside the box of “should?”

There seems to be an unconscious push towards creating things in a way that detaches us from ourselves. We ask questions like…

“Will this resonate with my ideal client? Is this easily shareable? Will this please the algorithm gods? Will this make me more money? Will this go viral?”

I can’t help but wonder what the world would have missed out on if some of the greatest artists of the past had created based on those questions.

Would Van Gogh have painted Starry Night?

Would Maya Angelou have written Why the Caged Bird Sings?

Would Queen have performed Bohemian Rhapsody?

In the process of strategy and momentary popularity, we risk losing sight of our intrinsic creativity. As we blindly chase what we think we want, we miss out on what we (and the world) actually need.

Following someone else’s strategy of doing things the “right” way isn’t what allows us to become the fullest version of ourselves. The process of forging our own path does.

We each have a unique voice that is worthy of being heard. Your stories and innate gifts will be a lifeline for others. We create because we were created. It’s in our nature to use and share our gifts to make this world a better and more beautiful place.

What you create will become your legacy.

Create how and what you genuinely want to create. The world will be better because of it, and so will you.

What do you want your legacy to be? What would you want to create even if no one saw it? Why did you desire to create in the first place? Why do you have the dreams that you do?
